Pharmacogenomics for Chronic Pain

Pharmacogenomics is the study of how a person’s genetic makeup has an impact on their response to medications. The goal is to optimize medication used to treat their chronic pain based on their genetic makeup in order to reduce unnecessary and repeated medication trials.  It is important to note that two people of the same age, gender, height and weight will respond differently to the same dose of the same medication based on their genetic heritability.

The results of this test are used to maximize the efficiency of medication as well as minimize adverse drug reactions and drug-drug interactions. The test, which takes only a few minutes to collect a swab from the cheek, is often covered by insurances. The report is available in 1 to 2 weeks and we review this with our patient and provide an extra copy for their records and to share with other providers. If we are going to use medications our philosophy is “The right medication at the right dose for the right patient.”
